One Year Old Preschool: Food & Feeding – Early Manners

This entry is part 7 of 19 in the series One Year Old Preschool

The current unit we are working on is foods and feeding.  The theme verse for this unit is “Give us this day our daily bread” from Matthew 6:11.

The purposes of this unit are: learning to eat with a spoon/fork and a plate/bowl, increase communication at mealtime through sign language, and instill a basic understanding of the provision of God in our everyday lives.

Much of what we did this week was reinforcement of what we did the last week.  We continued to pray before every meal and worked on placing the cup upright and keeping the plate on the table.  We also continued to use the sign for “more” to great success!  She really understands that “more” means “give it to me!” Continue Reading

One Year Old Preschool: Food and Feeding – Milk and Brownies

This entry is part 8 of 19 in the series One Year Old Preschool

We are still working our way through a unit on Food and Feeding.

She really understands that “more” means “give it to me!”

I have been learning as a parent that consistency is the key to learning, so constant direction and reinforcement has proven rewarding. Continue Reading

One Year Old Preschool: Catch up edition

This entry is part 9 of 19 in the series One Year Old Preschool

We have really dropped the ball around here on the organized preschool thing for G.  But it is amazing all the things this little one is learning!   It reminds me of when Moses talked about how to teach the Law of God to the next generation:

“You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up.” Deut. 6:6 (NASB version)

Teaching children is not exactly an organized scientific and planned process.  There is a specific time for that, but as we know, our kids are little sponges soaking up knowledge at every turn and at all times! Continue Reading

One Year Old Preschool: Winter

This entry is part 10 of 19 in the series One Year Old Preschool

It is crazy that we have to actually teach our children about winter.  But since we live in the desert, it is a concept that is pretty foreign to our girls.  It snowed one time here in the desert  in the last nine years, but we live next to mountains that get snow every winter.  The only problem is, we don’t do mountain roads (no thank you!); so endeavoring to teach a preschool unit on winter was a little daunting.  That is why when we got a winter storm in the middle of our first week of our unit, I was so thankful to be able to point out the snow on the mountains to G and have her exclaim, “Winter!”  It worked!  She has a basic concept of what winter is and that is what I was going for! One Year Old Preschool: Creation

This entry is part 11 of 19 in the series One Year Old Preschool

We are finally getting back to a structured (as structured as an 18 month old will allow) preschool after a long hiatus to have a new little one.  That doesn’t mean the learning stopped in the interim, but most of it was spur of the moment teaching.  I love that type of learning situation for our little one, but I am excited to have unit studies and plans to fill her days.

So to get started for the new year, we started at the beginning – the very beginning – and talked about the creation all week.  Starting on Monday we talked about each day of creation for a day and tried to do an activity that would reinforce the VERY basic concepts we were trying to teach her.  We wanted to start to expose her to the fact that God created all we see around us.  I mean, if the 6-day creation is something that even mature Christians can get lost trying to figure out, we weren’t going to start to teach scientific concepts just yet (But soon…I hope!).

The theme verse for this unit is “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1) Continue Reading
