Cooking with Kids: Brownies in a Snowstorm

Each week, I have been trying to get G in the kitchen to have fun and make something yummy.  She loves to help and this gives her an opportunity to do so.  It also gives us an opportunity to work on various skills.  This week we made brownies in a snow storm.

We had on hand some of that brownie mix that you just pour water in to and shake.  Yes, I know not gourmet brownies, but boy did we have fun shaking it!  We sang:

“Shake, shake, shake

Shake, shake, shake

Shake your brownies!

Shake your brownies!”

By the end of this exercise, G knew the word brownie and was singing right along with me.

When they came out of the oven, G sprinkled mini marshmallows on top of the still warm brownies and D pressed them down.  You could then put them back in the oven for a few minutes to melt the marshmallows or place them under the broiler for a few minutes to brown them, if you like.

Viola! Brownies in a Snowstorm!

Baking with Baby

This entry is part 19 of 33 in the series Baby Days

Well, it wasn’t exactly pat-a-cake around here yesterday, but we did get some great fun out of a small investment.  We decided on the spur of the moment (encouraged by G constantly pulling down the Betty Crocker cookie mixes from the pantry) to make G’s inaugural batch of chocolate chip cookies.

I have never tried the Betty Crocker cookie mixes for actual cookies.  I have always used them for some other recipe, so I was pleasantly surprised by the results.

Grace got in on the mixing fun and…of course, she had to have a taste.

Then, she went down for a “nap.”  When she got up, we had a cookie together.  Her first!

Such fun and less than $3.00 for the ingredients!
