Wiffle Ball Painting

Simple Summer Activities Wiffle Ball PaintingWe are in the midst of a week all about balls in this house.  We have been playing “hall ball,” talking round and bouncing all over the place. We have also been searching high and low for circles and balls and I thought it would be fun to create some art while we were at it.  And I am in love with the results.

Since I am not a very artistic person, my daughter is helping me to develop my art muscle (it is there, I am sure).  I like to do “process art” with her because the results are completely open-ended, but she gets the experience of creating something beautiful.  And this fun project was so messy and active!

Here is what we did: Wiffle Ball Painting!

Oh, it is so simple to put together this simple art activity.  Here’s how:

Materials

Procedure

I cut the butcher paper to fit in the bottom of the bin and taped it down on the sides.  Then I asked G to pick three colors of paint.  She chose blue, yellow, and purple.  I squirted a little bit of paint (haphazardly) on the paper.

We put this in the bathtub (and put G in her swimsuit) so that the mess didn’t get everywhere.

I told her to add the balls to the bin and roll them around a bit.  She did this for a little while with her hands, but then we started to roll the balls around by picking up the bin and tilting it in different directions.

The resulting art work was so neat!  Does it remind you of any “known” artists?  wiffle ball painting artwork

We had lots of fun with it and we tried it again with some more colors.  This was such a great easy summer activity!

Wiffle balls? Now that we haven’t tried…yet! I love the idea of doing this project in a bathtub – keep the mess contained!

This is an awesome idea! I may actually take this to use with my Girl Scout Troop (with some neatness revisions for 12 Girlies..lol) but I love it…Thanks for sharing!

I have no idea what a wiffle ball is (I’m Australian) but this activity looks great and I can already imagine a few possibilities for using the finished product 🙂

Funny, Amie! I guess it is an American thing. It is a plastic ball with holes in it. Kids use them early on in learning how to throw balls and play baseball. I assume you could use whatever balls you like, but I thought these would be interesting and safe.
