Since we officially have started school, we now get to plan after school activities! And the possibilities are endless! We have been considering a number of extra-curricular activities to keep our kindergarten kid busy during the afternoon. And last week I decided to have a fun after school play date with her friends to celebrate Back to School. It just seemed natural to bake brownies! Our play date was actually simple to throw together and the kids had LOTS of fun. I thought I would share with you our best ideas for planning an after school play date.

Baby skin is SO soft and so sweet. I am not sure exactly when it loses that special baby-soft quality, but I know it disappears. I have had friends want to smell my children, touch their whisper soft cheeks and soak in the sweet baby-ness that only lasts an instant. Our sweet little man (AG) still has it – he is 8 months old – and I am soaking it up while I can.
Soon the snakes and snails and puppy dog tails will take over. Our sweet little cuddle-bug will be running around jumping in mud puddles. Those milestone first foods will become first messes! For now the messes are staying quite contained. Continue Reading

Oh, goodness! We are about to embark on a new part of the parenting journey! Kindergarten! I can’t believe we are already here. It seems like the world could not have possibly gone 5 times around the sun since we had our oldest one. But here we are and I am excited and nervous (and excited and nervous, in that order) to start this new season in our lives.
I am currently in crazy planning mode: getting our “school” room set up, changing up the girls’ play area to include a new (boy) addition to the fun, banking meals in the freezer for this fall, and trying to figure out what in the world we are going to eat every day! And though all the planning can be a little overwhelming at times, I have created my own reward system in all the planning: Cookies! And milk!
Now, back at the beginning of the year, I would have never added the milk part to the mix. I was perfectly content with just a cookie thanks. And it was because I have had some tummy troubles when I drink milk. But this year I found a solution to the tummy troubles: a2 Milk®! It comes from cows that don’t have a hormone that is thought to cause most typical tummy issues in humans. So, it has me not only getting ready for back to school, but also back to milk and cookies!
And since I am in my intense planning stage for back to school, I thought I would share with you what we are planning for our after school snacks for this fall: Milk and Cookies! I mean this classic combination has been making kids squeal with excitement for ages – right? And I definitely want our kids to have some baked yumminess to look forward to at least once a week.
Bonus points on the day they have just come out of the oven.

Selling a house is HARD! It is a huge undertaking even in a “good market.” And it is, honestly, not my favorite thing to do. It has been 9 years since we sold our first home, but the lessons we learned in the process have been seared into my memory. Because we did it wrong the first time we tried to sell it. We learned the hard way that there are a number of things that one can do wrong when selling a home. And we discovered that there really is only ONE way to sell a home. Let me share with you what we learned along the way in a list entitled How NOT to sell a house (and the ONE thing to get it SOLD!)

I can still remember a time I lied to my Dad. It was a flat-out bold-faced lie. And it was (as all lies are) pointless. I was spending the night at his new apartment and he asked me if I had brushed my teeth. I told him I had.
I had not.
And he found out.
It wasn’t hard. He walked into the bathroom and checked to see if my toothbrush was wet.
I can’t really remember the consequence for lying to him other than having to actually brush my teeth. Not so bad.
But the lasting impact of that lie is obvious to me. And it was an indication to me that tooth brushing was a habit I didn’t really care for.
I am trying to make sure our kids don’t dislike tooth-brushing as much as I did. So we are starting early with the habit. And so far, they are the ones who remind us to do this daily habit!
I have found that if I want to start a habit in our home (for myself or my kids), I need to get organized to make it happen. I think of it as organizing with purpose.
And since we are trying to create the healthy habit of tooth-brushing with our kids, I came up with a super simple way to organize their oral hygiene supplies to encourage them to keep up the habit. Continue Reading

You know all those unique phrases you hear only in specific places? In the South, you hear, “Well, bless his heart.” In the Boston area, you hear, “Wicked” attached to almost anything. And in the Land Down Under, you hear, “Let’s put another shrimp on the barbie.” Which gets me thinking what other phrases you only hear in Australia. So, I looked up an Australian phrase book and had a good laugh over some of the things they say.
My absolute favorite one has to be “Technicolor yawn.”
What do you think it is?
I’ll give you some hints in this short story:
“I tend to have this problem after drinking regular cow’s milk. So I am now trying out a new all natural milk to help with the tummy troubles that accompany drinking milk (and milk-based drinks, like milkshakes), called a2 Milk®. So far, it has made it possible for me to drink milk again without feeling sick afterwards.”
