This entry is part of 31 in the series Baby Days

I have been on an extended run of diaper duty: SEVEN YEARS (!!) with no end in sight! Four kids under 7, means A LOT of diapers and A LOT of, ahem…smells. I know I am not the only homemaking mama that has tried it all to make sure that when welcoming guests into her home, they are not immediately tipped off to the fact that my day is full of diaper duty. Because, let’s be real:

DIAPERS STINK!

It took me almost 5 full years of diaper duty to discover the real-deal solutions to the diaper stink problem in my home, and I know you are going to want to know this, too!

We currently have two little ones in diapers. Ugh… and I have been working on this problem since long before we had our second baby. We discovered some things along the way that helped; but I solved the entire diaper stink problem.

The Hardest 15 minutes of my Day

This entry is part 40 of 42 in the series Hope for Homemakers

I get up in the morning around 5 AM.  I try to get to bed between 11 PM and 12 AM.  And I am usually up with our baby at some point in the middle of the night.  So there are a LOT of hours in my mothering/homemaking day.  Wow, writing that just now made me realize just how many! Dang…I deserve a medal!  And there are moments of my day that are a breeze.  There are moments of my day that are exasperating.  There are moments that are indescribable.  But there is a section of my day that I would definitely title: “THE HARDEST.”  Strung together near the conclusion of my many waking hours are the hardest 15 minutes of my day.

I have a major, major temptation to just avoid these fifteen minutes altogether.

They are that hard.

These minutes come at the end of every day, no matter what that day has thrown at me.  They knock on the door of my psyche and say, “It’s time.”  And I groan and say, “Really?  Do I really have to do it all over again?”

And the answer comes from within my own heart – most days – “Yes, it is worth it.” Continue Reading

Proper Care and Maintenance of Leather Furniture

a simple tutorial for the proper care and maintenance of leather furniture, details on what to choose when shopping for leather furniture and how to take care of it in your home

In the past couple of years I have had a number of friends mention a problem they are having with their leather furniture.  And they all seem to be having the same problem and saying the same thing: “I have a leather sofa that is wearing pretty heavily on the arms.  The leather is cracked and is peeling away.  What is wrong with it?”

While I do not claim to be an expert about leather goods, I have put a lot of thought into the problem and its solution.  And I own a vintage leather chair and a custom leather sofa, so I have put a lot of thought into how to care for them. So today I am going to share with you my thoughts about the proper care and maintenance of leather furniture.  I have a number of things to say about it before we get to the care part. Getting More Done, Knowing the Girls are Safe (+ A GIVEAWAY)

We are in a kind of strange place as a family.  It is a place marked by transition.  We are in the midst of preparing for the addition of another family member to our household.  This involves lots and lots of projects; nesting is REAL, folks!  But it also involves preparing the girls to be a little more independent in the coming days.  I will be nursing the new little one and know that means the girls will need to have some activities to do during all that time focused on the baby.  And I have been crazy impressed with how their independent natures have come out as I have been running around in the morning doing projects and preparing for baby.   Continue Reading
