Keeping Glass Shower Doors Clean (from Day One)

We are so close to being ready to reveal our remodeled downstairs bathroom…so close!  (UPDATE:  See our full bathroom all done and pretty here!)  And the patience that has been wrought in my heart as a result of this project is indescribable – it has been over a year since we started working on it!  But we have had almost everything done in that room for months now and are waiting on finishing touches.   So, I thought I would share a little preview of the made over bathroom along with a quick tutorial about keeping glass shower doors clean from day one.

If you do not have the luxury of starting out with clean glass shower doors from the very first day, please hop over to Ask Anna where I am sharing how to get water spots off of glass shower doors.  It is sort of like a cheat sheet to get you back to square one.  And this tutorial is the REAL way to clean glass shower doors – seriously, I feel like I have tried them all and this is the only way that has truly worked.

Ok, so if you are starting from day one or if you have gotten your glass doors back in ship-shape, this is what you do to maintain clean glass shower doors for months!

My cleaning geek friend (who is a glass repair expert), Gil, shared this product with me and even sent me some to get us started on our brand new glass shower doors.   And it cannot be easier to use.

How to Keep Your Shower Glass Doors Clean

Before you use your shower for the first time (or after you have gotten it super clean!), use the Aquapel product to keep it clean!

Follow the instructions on the Aquapel package.

This will leave a white slurry over the surface of the glass.

Once you have scrubbed the area, simply use water and paper towels to clean the surface.  I used a wet paper towel to wipe off the slurry and a dry paper towel to dry the surface.

To get it really streak free, you can go over the glass with a lint free cloth to ensure you have a perfect surface. This is looking out through the glass into our tiny bathroom.  Yes, it is that clean!

Why this Keeps your Shower Glass Doors Clean

You may want to know the philosophy behind this process.  And though I am not an expert, I can explain it to you like this:

Despite the common phrase “smooth as glass,” glass is actually not smooth.  It is really a rough surface that automatically attracts and holds onto hard water.  So when you use this Aquapel product, it smooths the surface of the glass to help the glass to repel the hard water.  You will get a better “sheeting” effect when you run water over the surface of the treated glass.

It does not last forever, but you can expect it to last for months!  And the process is so fast that doing it every few months is no big deal.  Much, much better than some of the processes and concoctions I have seen on Pinterest!

By the way, two of the bathrooms in our home have been remodeled. We had shower glass installed in both of them. The downstairs bath (the darker one in the pictures) has looked amazing for about 6 years. The upstairs master bath (the brighter – white bathroom in the pictures) has looked just like the picture for over 3 years! I do the simple maintenance – daily and quarterly – to keep our shower glass spotless.

NOTE: If you have glass shower doors in your bathroom, you will also NEED to purchase a squeegee and use it on the doors every day, after every shower to maintain them.  It may seem like a hassle, but it is kind of the price for owning glass shower doors.  And it works to keep much of the spotting and staining that water can do to glass.

Do you have trouble with your glass shower doors?  I highly recommend this process/product!  If you try it too, let me know your experience with it in the comments.

AFTER I get the glass shower door REALLY REALLY clean (I usually use Windex, others just don’t work) I use Rain-X water repellant on the inside, and Rain-X Anti-Fog on the outside, and also on the windows and the mirrors.
