DIY Glitter Alphabet

DIY Glitter Alphabet magnets, so simple and fun!

Our girls have (finally) been sharing a bedroom for a number of months now.  It took for.ever. to get them in the same room, but now they are happy as clams in there.  And since it took so long to get it done, I kind of took my time in fully decorating the room.  Right now both of them are interested in the alphabet and I knew I wanted something in their room with the alphabet on it.  I set aside an old magnetic board for their room (I got it way back in college!) and went to the dollar store and purchased a set of alphabet magnets.  It took months to get around to the project, but I ended up getting inspired by a haphazard placement of craft items in a bin one morning.  It just so happened that the perfect shade of glitter was sitting next to the alphabet magnets and -bam!- inspiration!  I quickly, like 30 minutes quick, threw together some glitter alphabet magnets for their room!  And I really love the result!

We are very minimal in regard to what we allow the girls to keep in their rooms.  We do not have any toys (except for stuffed animal friends), we only have some of our massive collection of books, and we have their clothes in the closet.  It really helps to keep the room clean when we limit the amount of stuff that goes in there.  But we have been working on a gallery wall for their room that (hopefully) will work and change for them as they grow.  These glitter alphabet magnets are a perfect addition to their gallery wall.

Here’s how the project for creating Glitter Alphabet Magnets goes:

What you need (with some affiliate links for your convenience):

DIY Glitter Alphabet Magnets, materials

a dollar store set of alphabet magnets

Mod-Podge

small container

brush

glitter in the shade you like

a magnetic surface – for display

How to make the Glitter Alphabet Magnets:

1. Lay out the entire alphabet on a flat surface with enough room to work.  I took a piece of cardboard large enough to work on.

2. Pour a small amount of Mod Podge into a small container.  A little bit goes a long way on this project.

3. Brush a small amount of Mod Podge onto a letter, making sure to cover the entire surface of the front of the magnet. Work one letter at a time.

4.  Sprinkle glitter over the entire surface of the letter.  Make sure you get the whole surface area.  Set aside to dry.

5. Repeat steps 3-4 25 more times until the entire alphabet has been glitterized.

6.  Shake off excess glitter and place the letters on a magnetic surface.

Note: these are not intended for play, they are intended for décor.  If you are planning on using these for play, you will want to cover the surface with some sort of glaze to make sure the glitter stays on.

The girls are pretty excited about their glitter alphabet in their room.  Every time G sees them, she strikes up a chorus of the alphabet song!  Pretty soon, W will be singing right along!

You have mentioned in the past about your girls loving the alphabet, what were some methods you used to teach them? I know you have posted a few things in the past, but I am looking for more tips. My kiddos are 3.5 and 2.5. My son is the older and loves counting and mastered shapes and colors long ago but not the alphabet… my daughter knows some letters and can do some counting but doesn’t know all her shapes 🙂

Hi Leah! I will give this some thought and write a post about it! But off the bat, I would say that one of our very favorite books is Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. Our copy is wearing out! We always take the opportunity to sing the alphabet song at the end of the book a few times. This is basically where G learned the alphabet. She could sing the alphabet song at 18 or 19 months (but she was an early talker). I will think of some basic resources and games we have played and post them.
