Birthday Celebration

First Birthday party - having a ball

One year ago our lives changed forever with the birth of our little girl!  She was a surprise and a blessing and we have had a wonderful, wonderful year with her.  So, when I sat down to figure out an age and cost appropriate 1st birthday for her, I tried to come up with something simple.  The memories of that day are only going to be in our minds and her only knowledge of it will be from pictures.  There is simply no need to go crazy on the day, when it is a life we are celebrating and giving thanks for!

With this in mind, I did a little searching and found a great idea for a toddler birthday party theme:  bouncing balls!  The idea is to clear out a space in our house, lay down some padding, throw some balls of different sizes in there, and let the good times roll (you see what I did there?)!  I wanted to add a couple of age appropriate activities, so we invested $15 in a bubble blowing machine and another $15 in a parachute.  We kept the length of the party short and the guest list was limited to toddler age kids.

Here’s the results:

We really had a great time and there were lots of smiles (a few tears, but what can you expect?) and lots of clapping and lots of giggling.  The best part was we didn’t have to spend a bunch of money to make it happen.  We purchased the foam mats (the largest outlay) which can be used in numerous ways for years to come, and a few balls (some of which made PERFECT party favors) and a bubble blower (the hit of the party for some of the kids).  All told, right around $100.00!  Not bad for a simple kid’s birthday celebration!  It was also a great way for us to kick off our summer!

What did you do to celebrate your first child’s birthday?  What are you planning for the next birthday?  Please share your ideas, I have more than a few birthday parties ahead of me.

  1. What a fantastic idea! Plus even if you have lots of balls left over, you really can never have enough of them with a toddler in the house.
